3 June 2006

After a lot of convincing, the good wife was finally ok with the idea of me adding another car to the family. So with my minimal budget in hand I set about looking for a suitable Mk1 Escort project car.

This is when the above car was found in Bargo. It was cheap (but as you'll see later, probably overpriced!) and had a Weber carb and extractors on the 1300 manual. Perfect for a starting point for my track-day/weekend fun car. So cash was exchanged and we loaded it up and took it home.

It was a little rugged, but that was ok. It wasn't going to be a show winner, just a used (and most probably abused) racer. So the Swedish sauna spec door cars, buggered seats, lack of roof lining really didn't matter. Weight is the all important issue. We want to get rid of as much as possible.

So I started out by pulling all the lights out of the front and back and giving it a coat of rattle can red oxide, just to get rid of the black and make it all one colour mainly. The front and rear panel work was ok, not super straight, but no rust or anything.

Then I had to get rid of the manky old carpet, so out came the front seats. This is where I learnt that I really should have learnted more about Escorts and rust before buying a car!

Once the carpet was out the full extent of the rust could be seen. The drivers seat rail was not even attached to floor, the inner sill was buggered, there was a hole in the trans tunnel/firewall join, and the outer sill was more bog than metal. The drivers footwell wasn't it good shape either. Surprisingly the heater bubble and firewall below it are in good order. Although I don't know what waits for me under it!

Did some more poking about outside the car. Found some stuffed rear arches too. So I thought it was about time I learnt how to drive a welder. Especially considering the state of this shell. So I cut out the gunk, and built up a new rear arch. We also stuck a patch in the drivers floor too.

27/28 December 2006

The paint on the roof was all cracked up so I took it all off. There was a heap of surface rust under it, so hit it with the wire wheel and got it off. I found another patch of bog and feared the worst. But it seems that is was just covering a couple of minor bumps that will come out with a gentle whack.

May/June 2007

While motivation to get the shell in some sort of solid fashion was on the decline, I decided to start collecting other bits and pieces that I'd need. Found a couple of 1600 x-flows that needed a new home. Along with another set of extractors. And grabbed some great mk1 4-door door trims too, along with 4 door rubbers. They're used, but are way better than the non-existant ones I currently have.
