Carlyn let me have another couple of hours in the shed today so I got to sorting out mounting the compression strut brackets onto the chassis rails. I had to trim back the metal around the chassis rail to get the bracket to sit flush. I chucked a rivet through it to hold them on. I'm a little worried about how close to the exhaust the passenger side one is, that won't be good for the ball joint and rubber boot. Now I just need to find someone with a welder and some welding skills that can attach them for me. While doing this I wound the coilovers down to lower the front of the car so it was sitting a bit better. I'll need to get some helper springs now, cause the coils fall out when the car is jacked up.

While ducking in and out of town dropping bits for Betty off (new electronic ignition dizzy) and sorting Trevs new car (E12 BMW M535i) I dropped 2 more wheels in to get tyres on them. Whacked them on today and they look great. Although clearance is an issue. I'll need some sort of flares on there, either Twin Cam or maybe something bigger for the superlights. They've got a lot of 'poke' at the moment. The front of the arch will need extending forward too as there is a lot of contact when any lock is applied.

While pondering the wheel arches I thought some JDM style arches in black on the orange car would look awesome. A nice bloke on Retro Rides shopped me up a picture. Looks pretty good I reckon. Shame the cost has knocked this idea on the head. Maybe something for another day. In the meantime a bloke on the Classic Ford Forum had a set of steel twin cam arch lips he was selling cheap. So I grabbed those. And now "fitting arches" has been added to the list for that person who can weld! I also had a harness bar made up by Garry at gazspeed.com.au. Its going to tuck in under the parcel tray and give a nice solid mount for the rear harness straps.

After a trip to the snow and being crook for a bit I got a bit of motivation and pulled the Mk2 2L Escort diff I had apart. MattyJ had offered the services of his dad to fit up the LSD into this centre. It all came apart nice and easy, and after a bit of a degrease I dropped it over to Matty along with the LSD and the new bearings and seals. So hopefully we'll have a nice new LSD centre to put back into the Mk2 casing. I need to get on and clean it up while its all apart. I might even give it a lick of paint! As a little bonus, it turns out its a 3.77 unit too, not the 3.54 I thought it was going to be.

Over the weekend I had a little bit of time here and there for playing on the car. I got the harness bar bolted in. All I need to do to finish it off is drill the holes for the eye bolts. But I need some eye bolts first so I know how big to make the holes. After that I had a play with the strut tops to crank the camber over. It worked well on the passenger side, I've got a few degrees of -ve now. But there is still some problem with the drivers side. Ah well, a problem for another day. In the meantime I took a couple more shots of the car and how its sitting now. I like the one of the front of the car from outside the shed. I've also ordered a brake line bender so I can have a go at whipping up some lines to the new master cylinder. Which I still need to have recoed.

After pulling the harness bar out again so i could drill the holes for the eye bolts I bought, it got bolted back in nice and solid. Its a bit tricky getting the eye bolts to line up right when they are tightened up. A bit more trial and error to go there. And I took the original seatbelt out and bolted the harness in and strapped in with the lap belt for the first time. I still need to buy a couple of 3" belt clips for the shoulder straps as the guy who I got them off used to run them mounted to his roll cage.

After checking out MattyJ's rally mk2 I just had to have myself an oil cooler. I'm not sure that I'll need one, but they look cool. So I grabbed a kit. But the sandwich plate looks like its wrong and doesn't fit the filter or the oil pump on the block. Ah well, better get that sorted. An then another night this week I secured the battery cable and sorted the wiring to the coil out. I was going to wrap it in tape, but thought I'd better see if it worked first! The engine bay is looking a bit neater now, especially after I gave the side a clean to get rid of all the black grot that was on there.
29 September 2011
I got a new sandwich plate off smcka (thanks for sorting me out mate) and all looks good for the oil cooler now. I've had a fiddle about working out where to mount it and come up with vertical on the drivers side. I'm not sure that's the best spot for it, and the hoses may be too long if I put it there. Also I read that it may need to be hard up against the radiator to stop turbulance in behind it. Dunno, I'll ask around and see what people think. I also cut and rebent the brake lines to suit the unboosted master cylinder. I tried my cheapo flaring tool, and it broke, so I'll have to take the lines to town and get the pro's to flare them for me.
6 October 2011
So to mount the oil cooler in this car I first had to take out the radiator. It was a job that was going to need doing anyway, so I pulled it and the overflow tank off. The tank may have to get moved to the other side of the radiator, depending on clearance to the oil cooler hoses. I had to rethink the top bracket as the one I made was in the way of the bonnet release cable. And the oil lines are way too long, so I'll have to find a place to get them shortened.
9 October 2011
I made up a new top bracket and then drilled some more holes in the car and got the oil cooler mounted. I reckon it looks cool tucked in behind the grille there ('scuse the pun). I swapped the hoses around so that the curved ends are at the cooler, that way the lines run straight into the sandwich plate. I've marked how long I want them too. I just need to work out which outlet on the sandwich plate is in and which is out. I want the oil to go in the top and out the bottom of the cooler. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.
23 October 2011
I've worked out which way around the oil cooler sandwich plate goes, and which one is in and out. And its better if the oil goes in the cooler at the bottom and out the top, that way it stops the oil running out of the cooler when the engine is stopped, and prevents 'dry' running as the oil cooler fills up again the next time you start it up. Matty rang after his wedding and honeymoon (congrats Matty) to say his dad has finished the diff centre, so I ducked over there and picked it up. So much for cleaning the rest of the diff up while the centre was built! The LSD can wait in the boot now while I get organised with cleaning the other bits.
26 October 2011
The other day I finally got around to sorting out the shoulder straps on the harness. I'd gotten the brackets the other week so thought it was about time. It took some fiddling to get the lengths right and buckles in the right spots, but I think its all good. I might take some photos to see if the experts think I should move things around a bit. And today I went for a drive to a hydrolic place to get my oil cooler hoses shortened. He reckoned the machine would crush the hoses that I had, so I said stuff it, make me some new ones. So I got 2 new awesome hoses made, and the guy reckons they'll outlast the car! I got it all hooked up again and stuffed the cooler back in the car, managing to dent some fins on the fan in the process, hopefully its not a hole. I just need to tighten up the connections and we're done. Then I can stick the radiator and grill back on. I need to sort out the wires around the coil too. I had to turn it over and move it up to get it out of the way of the hoses, and now the wires are all in the wrong spot.
